Bailote is the name of a minor character in Vergílio Ferreira’s novel A Aparição. Regarded as one of the seminal literary works of so-called Existentialism, the novel takes the Alentejo landscape of the mid-20th century – both natural and human – as the centre of a spatio-temporal portrait which, whilst not strictly revealing a hidden side, nonetheless captures another facet of the sense of wandering that serves as the theme for Évora’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2027.
