Group exhibition
Palácio de São Bento, Lisbon
23.07 - 29.11.2026
Curated by Filipa Oliveira, Francisca Listopad and Paulo Pires do Vale, the exhibition takes the Constitution – as the founding text of Portuguese democracy – as its starting point to explore the role of language in shaping collective life. Through an artistic, civic and participatory experience, works of contemporary art engage in dialogue with extracts from the Constitution and with previously unpublished texts written for this occasion, proposing new interpretations of principles such as equality, freedom, housing, cultural creation, democratic participation and the right to resistance.
Organised by the Assembly of the Republic and the 50th Anniversary of 25 April Commemorative Committee, ‘The Word is the Place: The Constitution of the Community(ies)’ can be visited free of charge between 23 July and 30 November in the outdoor spaces of the Assembly of the Republic and the House of Parliament – Interpretation Centre.
