Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the participation of Rui Toscano in this year’s edition of ZONE 1, a debut program of VIENNAFAIR, the International Contemporary Art Fair FOCUSED ON CEE 2007. This independent event offers visitors the opportunity to see installation artworks and large presentations away from the pressure of traditional booths. It also marks newfound cooperation between VIENNAFAIR and the museum of modern art MUMOK (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna), as one of the participants will be awarded a special exhibition at the museum.
Born in Lisbon (1970), Rui Toscano will be presenting the video TO THE MOUNTAIN TOP, 2004, together with a suite of eight untitled drawings from 2007.
To date, Toscano’s body of work has eluded any possibility of categorization or enrolment into stylistic sections. His creations bring rich and diverse concepts, references and materials into play.
The presentation at Zone 1, comprised of the aforementioned single-screen video projection and framed works on paper, highlights the importance of drawing and the elements of mobility and mapping in the artist’s work. In ‘To the Mountain Top’, Toscano reconfigures the Brazilian city of São Paulo by re-employing and recycling the works on paper of the city, which he has copiously produced since 2002. Taking a selection of details of his various renderings of the architecture and façades of this densely populated metropolis as his point of departure, Toscano assembles these fragments in a manner that recalls the idea of Vertical Montage. The juxtaposition of elements transforms the buildings into an abstract, gridded and flattened composition, which compresses the image, animating, accelerating and projecting these otherwise static works into a utopian climax or rush of urban ecstasy.
