Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art is pleased to announce its participation in the first ever edition of Art Basel Qatar, in Doha, with a solo project by Ângela Ferreira, showcasing a 5 metre suspended and floating multimedia sculpture based on a Mozambique radio tower from rural areas in the mid-1970s.
Stone Free (model no. 1 for a radio and TV structure exploring the meaning of mining and freedom), 2026, captures two specific evocative moments: the first is the image of a Mozambican radio tower built in rural areas in the mid-1970s, which refers to the image of a monument to African utopia and is represented by the physical structure of the work, materialised in a horizontally suspended and floating tower; the second moment, through its title, questions the meaning of the word freedom.
It begins by pointing to the musical theme Stone Free, Jimi Hendrix's personal anthem of freedom, represented here by two films: a sound and image interpretation by Scúru Fitchádu and a video collage entitled Zama Zama based on the word “stone” (diamonds and precious metals) to reflect on the more artisanal and dangerous mining processes to which African miners are subjected when reusing some of the abandoned mine shafts.
